How these times are worked out
Sunrise and sunset are the moments the top edge of the Sun crosses the horizon at Singapore, with the usual allowance for atmospheric refraction. The tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are read at that sunrise in the sidereal zodiac, and each end time is the minute the Moon crosses into the next one. Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda are fixed eighths of the daylight chosen by the weekday, as is Gulika Kaal, so they follow the length of the day in Singapore rather than the clock.
Choghadiya divides the day and the night into eight parts each. Amrit is the most favoured slot, with Shubh and Labh also read as good times to begin. Char is neutral.
