What kundli matching is
Kundli matching, also called guna milan, is the Vedic way of comparing two birth charts before a marriage. The most widely used method, Ashtakoota, compares the two Moons: the sign each Moon was in and the nakshatra, one of 27 lunar mansions, it occupied. Those two facts are scored across eight categories and the points are added up to a total out of 36.
The eight kootas
Each koota carries more weight than the one before it. Varna (1 point) compares temperament and outlook. Vashya (2) looks at mutual attraction and influence. Tara (3) counts between the two birth nakshatras for wellbeing. Yoni (4) pairs the animal symbol of each nakshatra for physical compatibility. Graha Maitri (5) asks whether the rulers of the two Moon signs are natural friends. Gana (6) groups each nakshatra as Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa in temperament. Bhakoot (7) measures how far apart the Moon signs sit, and Nadi (8) checks whether both nakshatras fall in the same nadi, which the tradition treats as the most serious mismatch.
What 18 out of 36 means
Traditional readers use fixed bands. Below 18 is read as difficult, 18 to 24 as acceptable, 25 to 31 as very good, and 32 or more as excellent. Eighteen is the usual floor for a match to be considered, which is why it gets quoted so often. A score is a starting point for a conversation with an astrologer or a family, not a final answer: two charts with the same total can have their points in very different places.
Manglik and the doshas
Mangal dosha, often called being Manglik, is counted when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. Because the ascendant needs a birth time, the calculator only checks it when a time is given. The tradition treats the dosha as cancelled when both people carry it. A Nadi or Bhakoot koota that scores nothing is also named as a dosha, and each has classical cancellations that a full reading applies.
