CrescentDasha and transit: how Vedic astrology actually times things
A transit tells you what is knocking. The dasha tells you whether anyone is home to answer. You need both.
The most common mistake in reading a Vedic chart is treating a transit as an event. Saturn crosses your Moon and you brace for disaster. Then nothing much happens, and you conclude the whole thing is noise.
The transit was real. It just had nothing to activate.
Two layers, not one
Vedic timing works in two layers that have to agree.
The dasha is the blueprint. The Vimshottari system divides a 120 year cycle among the nine grahas, and the period you are running says which planet is in charge of this stretch of your life. It is decided by where the Moon sat at your birth, which is why an accurate birth time matters so much.
The transit, or gochara, is the activation. It is where the grahas are in the live sky right now, moving over your natal positions.
An event fires when the two point at the same thing. If your running period belongs to the lord of your tenth house, and a slow transit hits that same house or that same lord, career moves. If the transit arrives while a completely unrelated period is running, it passes over you with far less effect.
The nesting is where the precision lives
A mahadasha can last nineteen years. Told on its own it is close to useless: it says the decade, not the month.
Inside it sit the antardashas, sub-periods proportioned by each graha's share of the cycle, and inside those the pratyantardashas. Reading the mahadasha lord, the antardasha lord and a slow transit together is what narrows a prediction from a decade to a window of weeks.
This is why Crescent shows the sub-period alongside the main period rather than the main period alone. The long one gives the theme. The short one gives the date.
Which transits actually matter
Not all of them. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days and mostly colours a mood. Saturn takes two and a half years per sign, Jupiter one year, and the nodes about eighteen months. Those are the ones that reshape circumstances, and they are the ones worth watching against your period lords.
A fast planet can trigger something a slow one has already set up. On its own it rarely starts anything.
The practical version
Find your running mahadasha and antardasha. Note which houses those two grahas own and occupy. Then look at where Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu are transiting. Where those overlap is where your year is actually happening. Everything else is weather.
