Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. It is the most personal point in the chart, and it is the one nobody knows without a birth time.
Why it is not just a mask
The usual line is that the rising sign is the mask you wear. That undersells it. The ascendant sets the first house, which sets every other house, which means it determines the entire structure of which planet governs what. Change the ascendant and you change the whole chart, not just the impression.
What it describes
How you approach anything new, your physical manner, and the version of you that arrives before you have decided anything. People consistently describe others by their rising sign and themselves by their Moon, which is why your friends' description of you can feel foreign from the inside.
It moves fast
The ascendant advances about a degree every four minutes and a full sign every two hours. That is why twins born twenty minutes apart can differ, and why a chart from a remembered rather than recorded time should be treated carefully.
Finding yours
You need date, time and place. There is no shortcut and no way to infer it from your Sun sign; any site that gives you a rising sign without asking for a time is producing a decoration.
