Conjunction
A conjunction happens when two planets sit at nearly the same degree, blending into one powerful voice. The result depends on the planets involved, and can be harmonious or tense. It is the most intense aspect because the two energies act as a single force.
Aspects and drishtiDrishti
Drishti is the Vedic system of aspects, where a planet casts its gaze on other houses and planets. Every graha aspects the seventh house from itself, and Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have extra special aspects of their own. Unlike Western aspects, drishti is counted by whole houses rather than exact degrees.

An opposition places two planets across the chart from each other, creating a push and pull. It often shows up through other people, mirroring back what you need to integrate. The work is balance, holding both ends instead of swinging between them.

A sextile links two planets about 60 degrees apart in a supportive, low pressure way. It offers a gentle opening rather than a guarantee, rewarding you when you make a small effort. Think of it as a door left ajar that you still have to walk through.

A square sets two planets at 90 degrees, creating inner tension and challenge. It can feel like an obstacle, but it is also the engine of growth and motivation. Handled well, that friction becomes drive and real accomplishment.

A trine connects two planets about 120 degrees apart in the same element, letting their energies flow together smoothly. It brings gifts that come naturally to you. The only caution is that easy things can be taken for granted and left undeveloped.

Each birthday the focus of the year advances one house, returning to the first at twelve, twenty four and so on. The ruler of the sign on that house becomes the time lord for that year, and wherever that planet sits, and whatever transits touch it, matters more than usual for those twelve months.

A mahadasha can run for nineteen years, which tells you the decade rather than the month. Inside it sit nine antardashas, each belonging to one graha and sized by its share of the 120 year cycle. Reading the mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord together is what narrows a prediction from a decade to a window of weeks.

The ascendant, or rising sign, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. It sets the whole layout of your houses and shapes your appearance and first impression. Because it changes every couple of hours, an accurate birth time matters most for getting it right.

Ayanamsha is the gap, currently around 24 degrees, between the fixed star sidereal zodiac and the season based tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology subtracts it to work from the actual constellations. Different schools use slightly different values, with Lahiri being the most common.

Gochara is the live sky measured against your birth chart. On its own a transit is only a knock at the door. It tends to produce an event when it lands on the same theme as the dasha period you are running, which is why Vedic timing always reads the two layers together.

Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoota, matches two charts across eight factors for a maximum of 36 points. Each factor weighs a different layer of a partnership, from temperament to health to emotional friendship. A higher total suggests smoother compatibility, though a skilled reader looks at the whole chart, not just the number.

A mahadasha is the largest period in the Vimshottari system, ruled by a single planet for anywhere from 6 to 20 years. Whichever planet is running colors the overall flavor of that whole chapter of life. Inside it sit smaller sub periods that fine tune the timing month to month.

Mangal dosha is present when Mangala sits in certain houses from the lagna. Tradition treats it as adding heat and friction to a marriage, and reads it as largely cancelled when both charts carry it. It is one factor among many, and a chart is never decided by it alone.

Nakshatras divide the zodiac into 27 segments, each ruled by a deity and a planet, in the Vedic tradition. Your birth nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born, and it adds a fine layer of personality beyond your Moon sign. It is central to Vedic timing, matchmaking, and choosing auspicious moments.

Each nakshatra is split into four padas, so the sky has 108 padas in total. A pada narrows the Moon's position further and links it to a navamsa sign, sharpening the reading. It is used in matchmaking and in placing the first letter of a traditional name.

Rashi means a zodiac sign in Vedic astrology, the familiar twelvefold division of the sky. Your Moon rashi, the sign the Moon was in at birth, is often what a Vedic astrologer means by "your sign." The main birth chart is also called the rashi chart, or D1.

Retrograde is an optical effect where a planet seems to travel backward against the stars, caused by the way Earth and that planet orbit the Sun. Astrologically it turns a planet's energy inward, favoring review, revision, and reflection over bold new starts. Mercury retrograde is the best known, often blamed for mix ups in messages and plans.

Synastry lays one chart over another and reads the angles between them. A close contact between your Moon and the Venus of someone else describes a specific kind of ease; a hard angle describes a specific kind of friction. It describes the texture of a relationship, not whether it should exist.

The tropical zodiac, used in Western astrology, starts at the spring equinox and is anchored to the seasons. The sidereal zodiac, used in Vedic astrology, is anchored to the actual positions of the constellations. Because the two have drifted apart over centuries, your Sun can land in different signs depending on which system you use, yet both describe the same person.

A varga is made by cutting each sign into equal parts and mapping the part a planet falls in onto a new sign. The navamsa (D9) is consulted for marriage and for the underlying strength of every planet; the dashamsha (D10) for career. A varga is not a second horoscope: the main chart decides whether something is promised, and the varga only says how strongly.

Vimshottari Dasha divides your life into long periods, each ruled by a planet, based on your birth nakshatra. The sequence and lengths are fixed, adding up to 120 years, and they tell you which planet is currently steering your story. It is one of the most powerful tools in Vedic astrology for predicting when themes come alive.

A yoga is a recognised pattern, such as Guru sitting at an angle from Chandra, that classical texts attach a specific meaning to. Some lift a chart and some weigh it down. A yoga is a piece of evidence rather than a verdict: whether it delivers depends on the strength of the planets involved and on which period is running.

The tenth house sits at the top of the chart and rules your work in the world and how you are known. It covers career, status, and your long term goals. Planets here shape your ambitions and the mark you want to leave.
