The elements: fire, earth, air and water

Before you learn a single sign meaning, learn the four elements. They carry most of the weight, and a chart heavy in one of them tells you more than any individual placement.

What each one does

Fire is Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. It is initiative and self-expression, energy pushed outward, and it does not wait for permission. Its weakness is that it burns without regard for supply.

Earth is Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. It is what can be built, measured and kept. Its weakness is treating whatever cannot be measured as though it does not exist.

Air is Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. It is thought, language and relationship between things. Its weakness is describing an experience so well that it never has to be felt.

Water is Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. It is feeling, memory and what runs underneath. Its weakness is that a mood becomes a fact.

Reading the balance

Count the elements across the ten bodies and the ascendant. What matters is not the exact count but the extremes. A chart with no earth usually struggles with follow-through and admin, not because the person is lazy but because there is nothing in them that finds those things intrinsically satisfying. A chart with no water tends to process feeling intellectually and be startled when it surfaces anyway.

A missing element is not a flaw to fix. It is the department you will have to run deliberately rather than instinctively, usually by borrowing a system or a person who has it.

Why this beats sign lists

Sign descriptions are memorisation. Elements are structure, and structure lets you read a chart you have never seen. Given only that someone is heavy in fixed water, you already know a great deal about how they hold on to things.
